110-Kokoda training/info session - Sunday, June 15

Things are getting exciting! Kokoda is still well over a year away, but I have been talking to the other paid up guest, John "The Hound Dog" Rakic, and we have decided to have a training/info session for anyone who is considering taking part.

We will be having a BBQ at 20 Handley Ave, Thornleigh at 1pm after a "training session" (a walk through the bush) starting at Ern Holmes oval in Pennant Hills at 10.30am. Jason Clarke will be giving a talk on his walk along the Kokoda track a few years ago, then answering any questions people have that might help them make a decision.

Going totally off track, if you would like to ask John or I a question about Kokoda on June 28 between 2 and 2.30, we will be unavailable as we will both be making an AFL comeback, representing the Pennant Hills Demons old boys against "The World" team at Mike Kenny Oval between the reserve grade and first grade matches.

If you would like to join us on the 15th though, let me know so we can cater, and we look forward to seeing you then. For those wishing to join the training session, our tour group, Kokoda Spirit highlight "Specificity" when training - ie, train as you'd walk the track. They recommend wearing all the clothes and boots you'd wear on the track, and carry a daypack loaded with 10-15kg.

If you need anymore information, please give me a call, otherwise we will see you on the 15th

109-Saturday's speech-what playing representative football has meant to me

I have done a lot of things in my life that I'm proud of, but one that stands out is that in my last game of AFL before having a stroke, I captained a Sydney AFL representative team to a 10 goal win over the Riverina AFL rep side with a torn artery in my brain stem, and this Saturday, I'll be giving a speech to the 2014 Sydney rep team about what playing rep footy has meant to me.

Playing footy has been the difference between life and death for me, so I was honoured when the Sydney AFL asked me to get involved in the 2014 rep program, and in my speech on Saturday, I will just be SHOWING this years squad what playing rep footy has meant to me, not TELLING them how honoured they should feel.

The speech will take place at the GWS Giants training HQ (1 Olympic blvd, Olympic Park) on Saturday, May 24 after the rep squads train at 10.30, and friends and family of anyone involved in the rep program and anybody from the Pennant Hills Demons family are invited to come down and watch the boys train then come inside for the address which will start at midday.

There will also be a message of congratulations and good luck from a former Australian test cricket opening batsman.

After the address, walk down the road to Skoda Stadium to see the Giants take on the Tigers.

108-Motivational speaking slow burn exploding

The slow burn of my motivational speaking career has been exploding lately, and after I was signed by a speakers bureau (www.speakerbook.com.au) on Friday, I feel like Sherminator from American Pie: "confidence is high, I repeat, confidence is high."

I started my motivational speaking career in March last year, so it has been an extraordinarily slow burn, but I feel like my level of success as a speaker will be commensurate with how long I've waited to get it right.

When I speak to audiences I try and make them feel good about the life they're living - I've never claimed to be a business guru, or a leadership specialist-my area of expertise is getting bashed and having strokes, so all I'm trying to do is encourage people to be proud of living a decent, honest life. To find out how I'm doing it, check out my listing on speakerbook:

107 - A gift to the Pennant Hills AFL club from Barnaby Howarth & Luke Turner

It may not be a person, a being or an organism - it's not capable of showing emotion or expressing love, and it can't give presents or show gratitude for any it recieves, but the  Pennant Hills Football Club has done so much for Luke Turner and I that we want to give it a small gift - $1000 worth of Swisse multivitamins.

Luke and I submitted a video about my 100th game for the Pennant Hills Demons in July last year to the Swisse Quality Club of the Year competition, where the runners up prize was $1000 cash and $1000 credit on the Swisse online store. We gave the Demons the $1000 cash at Give it a Crack last year, and now it gives me great pleasure to present the Pennant Hills AFL club with $1000 of Swisse multivitamins from the online store on behalf of Luke Turner and I.

Results in the competition were based on the number of 'likes' given to each competing video on Facebook, so to everyone who 'liked' our video, thank you.

To see the video, go to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6JcqoOCeMw, but for the footy club, $1000 of Swisse multivitamins are yours for the taking, so any potential spectators, get down to see the Demons over the next few weeks, as after a diet rich in protein bars, fish oil tablets and vitamin supplements, they are going to be ripped, buff, and firing on all cylinders.
