If I were to sit down and tell you about my Christmas day so far, you'd probably look at me a bit confused and say...
"So?"
This has been one of the best Christmas' I've had, and the highlight has been...nothing. Absolutely nothing earth changingly dramatic has happened, and it's been beautiful. So far it has been a completely normal, everyday, happy Australian Christmas. It's so normal in fact that some people may say it sucks - while my family are shelling prawns, starting the barbecue, setting lunch places, and playing with the toys they opened this morning, I'm sitting at work writing a blog.
The normality started last night when my wife and I joined my family and some friends for Christmas Eve dinner at my brothers house. The main topic of conversation was the wedding of our family friends that the groom declared a "no crying event," but then my brother showed a video of the groom breaking down in tears when he sees his bride walk down the aisle. As people headed to bed early, it was to the sound of my niece singing "tis the season to be Charlie, fa la la la la, la la la la."
I woke this morning to the screams of my nephew "Uncle Barns, I got a Leonardo!" My parents and sister joined us and we all sat around the tree opening our presents. Then, dressed in my sexy new threads my wife got me, we were both lured to the mobile coffee van sitting over the road where Rick, the owner told us he wasn't open for business, but he'd make us a special one at no charge for Christmas.
With drinks in hand, my wife then drove me from the Northern beaches into work in the city (massive!) I sat down and started writing a blog, and that brings us up to right now.
"So?" - I hear you say, but that's my exact point. There has been nothing extraordinarily amazing about this Christmas, and that's why it's been so good - I've just been eating, drinking, opening presents and generally just hanging out with the people I love.
Merry Christmas everybody - I hope absolutely nothing happens today, and that you love it.

163-Riding to conquer cancer
When you celebrate the little things in life, the big things seem so much more special, so next year, my wife and I will be riding in the Chris O'Brien Ride to Cure Cancer.
When our friends Mary and Ramy asked us to join their team for the 200 km ride in October, it took us a New York second to say yes. Today is Angela & my 1 year, 3 month and 16 day anniversary, we recently reminisced about the first time we held hands, and one of our favorite things to do is have a cup of tea at our local coffee shop - Angela and I love the small things in life, so a 2 day ride with a nights camping by the Hawkesbury River, and a requirement to raise $2500 each is a challenge so big I'm quivering with excitement.
The ride is on the 10th & 11th of October, then a couple of weeks later, Angela and I will be heading to Papua New Guinea to try and walk the Kokoda track. For both the ride and the trek, we will be trying with everything we have to reach the end, but we are just doing them for the same reason any other married couple would do it - to share a challenge with the person we love.

162-Barnaby to give stand up comedy a crack in 2015
I thought I was pretty funny when I was younger, and next year I'll get my chance to prove it at Give it a Crack, when I perform a solo stand up routine.
I'll be telling the joke I made up when I was about 12, I'll be revealing the comedy skit I wrote with my mate, Andrew Bowers, in year 9, and I'll be doing it all at the Sydney Comedy Store on November 18 next year.
I have already written my "set" (that's what we call it in the biz), but if anyone has any cracking jokes or stories, pass them on and I'll see if I can work them in.
Tickets will be on sale next year,

160-Appreciate the small things
Eating a Woolworths cookie might not be considered an achievement in most people's eyes, but I just did it using my left hand and I felt like giving the dude next to me a high 5.
The reason I was so excited is because I have a cerebral tremor in my left hand caused by a stroke, so gripping anything in my left hand is incredibly difficult - if the exaggerated grip strength doesn't crush the thing I'm holding to oblivion, the violent shake will inevitably end up with me dropping it on the floor.
The tremor gets worse when I'm trying to manipulate something in my fingertips, but the only way to improve the control in my left hand is to use the hand as much as possible. So over the last few weeks I've been rolling a straw in my left fingertips to try and improve my control, and when I got a cookie from Woolies yesterday, I decided to see how far I'd come and eat it in my left hand. I was amazed that I could break bits off and put it in my mouth before crushing it or dropping it on the ground, but I was more amazed by the joy that something so simple brought to my life.
It dawned on me yesterday that I struggled to remember the last time something simple in life made me sit back and say "Wow" - I used to send a friend "Left Hand Achievement Reports" when I found I could do something again with my left hand - picking up a Tic Tac, using cutlery. eating an apple or doing a cuff link up all floated my boat - so after my Woolies cookie success, I'm going to keep twiddling my straw and looking out for more "Wow" moments.

158-Barnaby Howarth to speak at Diabetes NSW Live your Life Ball
After starting my motivational speaking business in March, 2013, today I'm excited to announce that I just booked my first keynote address at Diabetes NSW's Live your Life Ball.
I'll be talking about how I've just kept living the life I wanted despite diabetes - after I was diagnosed I played AFL for the Sydney Swans, survived a non diabetes related stroke, wrote a book, climbed Mt Kilimajaro, filmed a documentary, was admitted to the Sydney AFL Hall of Fame and married the girl of my dreams.
If you're looking for some assurance that the life you're living RIGHT NOW is something you should be proud of, come to the Diabetes NSW Live your Life Ball next February

157-Thoughts on Barnaby Howarth from cousin Shea Wittig
I've written a lot of blogs about myself over the years, but this morning my cousin wrote a blog about me that is so humbling I wanted to share it. This is from Shea Wittig's blog "Conversations with my sister"

Our Little Girl is scared of the rain so, to highlight the #fun side of storms, we took to #playing in the puddles.
Sound advice from @BarnabyHowarth, a former AFL Footballer who was diagnosed with diabetes at age 14 and survived a stroke at age 25 after being 'king hit' in a gang attack. Since then he has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, published a book and, one of his proudest moments, recently getting married. Now he and his beautiful Wife are travelling the world on their Honeymoon while he delivers #Motivationalspeeches in each country they visit - look him up here: http:// barnabyhowarth.com.au/

156-Angela & Barnaby's world tour honeymoon begins
When my wife and I sat down before our wedding and talked about where we wanted to go for our honeymoon, we decided we didn't only want to see one place, we wanted to see the world, and 2 weeks ago our world tour honeymoon started in Auckland, New Zealand.
There are so many places we want to visit - the USA, South Africa, Europe, Canada, Singapore & Japan - but we are attacking it with no plans, when we turn up in a country, we'll have no idea where we'll be heading next - it's a nerve wracking way to plan a honeymoon, but after my interview on Sky TV in Auckland (http://youtu.be/lONSBfZgEGk), I feel like it's all going to work out beautifully for us.

155-David Thomason-a great bloke, a great life
David Thomason was a decent, honest Australian bloke.
He wasn't a CEO, he wasn't an Olympian, he wasn't a movie star, and as far as I know, he never had ambitions to be any of those things, he was a marketing manager at Meat and Livestock Australia, a loving husband, a devoted father and an adoring grandfather. Davo was always a great bloke to chat to - he was intelligent & well informed, but never judgmental, and he always seemed interested in what you had to say.
Some people leave an impression on you as you move through life, and Davo was one of those blokes for me - I never heard him moan or complain or wish for something that would bring him personal gain, everything I ever heard him say or do was to make someone else's life better.
He was a guru on the barbecue, he loved and provided for his family, but most importantly for me is that he molded his daughter into a girl my mate wanted to start a family with.
David Thomason was a great man who made the people around him better.

154-Give it a crack back for 2015
Give it a crack 2014 was so successful that not only has the Sydney Comedy store agreed to host the event again in 2015, one of this years performers has donated money to the Pennant Hills Football Club.
The only complaint heard about Give it a crack Wednesday fortnight ago was that peoples jaws were still hurting hours later - the up & coming stand ups were hilarious, and were seamlessly guided through the night by MC Andrew Barnett. The auctioning of a Pennant Hills Footy jumper signed by Keiren, Brandon & Garry Jack, and my secret, surprise announcement (my biography), ensured the event was a success and will be back in 2015.
There will be another quality line up of stand up comedians, I started working on my next secret, surprise announcement on Tuesday night, and there will be a Pennant Hills Footy jumper signed by an AFL superstar who cut his teeth at Penno up for auction.
Give it a crack came about to give people a chance to get out of their comfort zones and try something they've always wanted to do, so in November next year, come along and support them while they do.
Tickets available from the comedy store soon.

153-My special surprise announcement revealed
My special surprise announcement was revealed last night at Give it a Crack, and it was received with the same excitement I felt when it was finished.
The surprise announcement is that I have employed the services of a professional author to write my biography - "Playing in the Puddles", and the result is an emotionally charged book that tells my story the way I've always wanted it told.
Here's how it begins...
"Foreword by Luke (the man who got involved in the fight that resulted in Barnaby having a stroke)

Here's how it begins...
"Foreword by Luke (the man who got involved in the fight that resulted in Barnaby having a stroke)
The night I found out Barnaby had suffered a stroke I knew my tears were
pointless. I knew they would fix nothing, but they wouldn’t stop. A week
earlier I had seen him lie motionless on the pavement. Briefly, I thought he
was dead. While I didn’t start the fight, I could have walked away. I should
have walked away."
This book is the second proudest thing I've done this year (after marrying my wife) - it's currently with publishers who are reviewing it for printing, but the first 4 copies have already been assigned (including the 4th edition which was sold for $700 in auction last night). To get yourself a copy, you can pre-order by sending an email to barnaby@barnabyhowarth.com.au.
I may be slightly biased, but this book is awesome - it's a REAL story about a REAL bloke who's been dealt some REALLY bad hands, but kept moving forwards. Get yourself a copy.

152-Barnegla the power couple want you at give it a crack
Dear people,
My wife and I have been flat out like a lizard drinking over the last week-after getting married on Sunday at the most perfect wedding I've ever seen, we are driving back from a beachside retreat at the entrance before we fly to Auckland tomorrow where I'll be a guest on a TV show on Monday, before we come back for Give it a Crack on Wednesday night.
This is where I'd be hopeless as a salesman: we need to sell 50 tickets online to break even, and so far we have sold 28, so I am asking you to invite all your friends, cousins, hair dressers and former room mates to give it a crack at 8.30 on Wednesday night at the comedy store in Moore park.

151-NZ on Monday-the round the world honeymoon begins
After a perfect courtship, a perfect wedding and a perfect Australian honeymoon, the perfect start to our "round the world honeymoon" began when I was invited to be a guest on "Wake up your Wow" with Cath Vincent on Sky Face TV in Auckland on Monday.
Angela and I want to travel the world on our honeymoon-Hawaii, Washington DC, London, Paris, Zanzibar and Tahiti are all on our radar, but the only problem is that neither of us can afford it, so we had a chat about how we might do it, and decided that I could keynote speak my way around the world telling our story.
It sounded like a really romantic idea with not much grounding in reality, until Cath Vincent called and asked if we could be in Auckland on Monday. After a flurry of organisation (booking flights, finding passports, getting time off work etc), Angela and I have booked our tickets to Auckland, and we will be back on Tuesday in time for Give it a Crack on Wednesday night.
If there has been a more perfect start to a marriage I'd love to hear about it-I don't know why things are working out so well for us, but I'm not going to lose sleep thinking about it-my wife and I need to go and pack our bags for New Zealand!

150-Wedding vows to Angela Youhanna Howarth Guirguis
I once said that if I were half the man my grandfather was, I'd be happy. Now as I write my wedding vows to my wife, I couldn't be happier - I love Angela with every ounce of energy I have, and the thought of calling her my "wife" gives me goosebumps. I think my Grandfather would be sitting next to my Gran in the heavens watching our wedding in the front row with Angela's father, and I think he would be proud.
So to my wife Angela, we have been there for each other for the best, and the worst parts of each others lives, and I couldn't think of a better place to be during the highs, and the lows than right by your side.
In case you weren't sure how much I loved you, here are my wedding vows:
"Angela, we will walk into church today as 2 separate spirits, but will leave as one, as today I will take you for my wife. I promise to love you without reservation, comfort you in times of distress, encourage you to achieve all of your goals, laugh with you and cry with you, grow with you in mind, and spirit, always be open and honest with you, and cherish you for as long as we both shall live.”
Thank you for everything you are, and for everything you mean to me.
I love you

149-My Special Surprise announcement
I have always thought that if you want something done, get it clear in your head what you want to do, and give it a crack, but my special surprise announcement is too important to be blase, so I employed the services of a professional, and the result is awesome.
I started working on my surprise in January with a view to having it ready for Give it a crack, 2014, and I had high hopes and expectations back then, but the finished product is better than I dared to dream. There are less than 10 people in the world who know what the surprise is, so I can't give any clues, but all will be revealed at Give it a crack on November 12 where this mystery item will be auctioned off.

148-wedding thank you
I have never had an idea of what I'd want my "fairy-tale wedding" to look like, but if I did, what's about to happen this Sunday when I marry the woman I love, is exactly what it would look like. Nothing just happens in wedding planning, and we want to thank all the people who have made it all come together for Angela and I.
2 of the most important people in our planning have been our sisters, Angela's sister Christine and my sister Ashley. Christine has organised Angela's hens weekend and a "henna night" that have made Angela feel like the Egyptian goddess she is, and Ashley, an event planner by trade has given us checklists & templates, and has given timing & supplier advice to make sure nothing needs to be sweated over on the day.
Our parents, Ross & Denise and Mary have provided every bit of support either of us have needed, but most importantly, they've all given us their undying love.
The bridal party, Angela's girls Christine, Lina, Sarah and Ashley have been by Angela's side to give her whatever she needs at the time, and my boys Adam, Lachlan, Adrian and Andrew have been...my boys. Nothing has been too much to ask for any of the bridal party.
Our flower girls, Charlie, Mia and Sienna and our page boys, AJ, Yohan, Oscar, Hugo, Peter and Kiaan - we are honored to have you guys as part of our day, and we can't wait to see you all walk down the aisle. One of the most important roles of the day is our Queen of the kids, Mary Kyrillos who will walk down the aisle with the page boys and flower girls.
Our Priest, Father Matthew has been guiding us through everything we need to know about getting married in the Coptic church - he has been friendly, flexible & helpful, and we are thankful that he will be the man in charge at our wedding ceremony.
The generosity of people who have offered their time or expertise has humbled Angela and I, things that would have been impossible are now reality and the day wouldn't have been half as spectacular without their help. Luke & Lauren from Turneraround photography, Brooke Khouri from Vesna Grasso florist, Ash Mansour - wedding car rental, Ash Turner - Gorgeous Hair & Make Up Studio, Emmanuel Kelly - entertainer, Lillian Botros, Christine Shaw, Janine Pensini & Donny Daboul, Marg and Ray Miles, Magdy Kyrillos, Andrew Botros, Mary Andrawis Megalaa, Germeine Albert & Castro Shehata, Yvette Francis, Ian Parker & Judy Jack.
If I have forgotten to thank anyone, please remember that my memory is like Dory from Finding Nemo these days - I have turned up to work twice on days off, so don't take any offence, as my Grandmother used to tell me "A slip of the tongue is no fault of the mind."
My future wife, Angela and I are so thankful and humbled by the lengths our family and friends are going to to ensure our wedding is going to be the most beautiful day everybody there has been a part of, and we thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.

147-Goosebumps after reading testimonial from Hills Grammar student
A good mate of mine recently told me that one of my best personality traits was my modesty, but given this is the third day in a row I am blogging with a testimonial from someone talking me up, he might need to reassess his opinion.
Reading this testimonial from a student who was at the speech I gave at my old high school gave me goosebumps, as some of the things the young lady took out of my speech were EXACTLY what I was hoping audiences would walk away with. Words like "real," "beautiful" & "motivational" are words I'd use to promote my speaking, so to come unprompted from a school student is pretty humbling.
Here is the testimonial:
"I was one of the students in the very front row at the Hills Grammar Sports Evening and your speech was extremely motivational and real. You had a beautiful way to touch people’s hearts, what you have been through is absolutely horrific yet amazing. Your speech thought me never to give up not matter what because there is somebody that is always worse off! This has come at a perfect time as I prepare for my yearly exams, as I get sick and tired of study I think back to what you said ‘life is for living, go play in the puddles’ I finished my study for the day now and go and have fun for the rest of the day and enjoy myself. Because this is the oldest I have ever been and the youngest I will ever be!
Thanks so much for the inspirationxxx"

146-Give it a Crack to be MC'd by former life saving surgeon
Comedians have been booked for Give
it a Crack, and they will be led by a really funny Aussie bloke with a really
moving story to tell.
Andrew Barnett will MC this years
Give it a Crack at Sydney's comedy Store on November 12, and he brings with him
not only a brand of good natured Aussie hilarity, but a history of performing
life saving surgery on malnourished African children.
When you see Andrew on stage, your first thought will almost certainly be "I want to go and have a beer with this bloke," but he has more layers than Shrek. Andrew spent the first years of his medical career in Africa, treating children suffering the effects of malnutrition, but after seeing his first episode of Letterman, he gave up his promising medical career, and is now one of Australia's most sought after comedians, and he will be hosting a huge talent pool of raw comedians at Give it a Crack.

145-"best motavational speech I have ever heard" - more feedback from Hills Grammar speech
When I started doing motivational speaking, I wanted to offer something different - I wanted to tell a real story about a real bloke who, after he got knocked down, didn't want to come back and conquer the world, he just wanted to give 100% to what was in front of him so he could get back to being a real bloke again - and after speaking at my old high school last night, I think the message is getting through.
I've got 2 unprompted comments about my speech last night, both from mothers who both said the speech had a big impact on their children. I posted the first comment in an earlier blog, but this one blew me away, so I thought I'd share it:
"I was at the presentation last night and that was the best motavational speech I have ever heard. It really highlighted the important things if life and I know it really hit home with my teenage daughter. Thank you."

144-Making Hills Grammarians proud of giving 100%
After speaking at The Hills Grammar School's sports presentation night last night, the head of School Council told me that "if silence was an indicator of a speech's success, you nailed it." Then when I got home, there was a note from one of the mothers present, saying "That was a brilliant speech...THANK YOU! Brilliant," and I realised my message had hit home.
I was trying to get the message across that sport can be more important in life than you may realise at the time - nobody can predict what the future has in store though, so all anyone can do is give 100% to the task in front of you and be proud of yourself.
I left the kids with one thought - if you think you've been hard done by in sport, or in life, remember that rain falls on the just and the unjust alike, but there comes a time when you just have to get over it and go and play in the puddles.

143-shaping the next generation of Hills Grammarians
I had no idea that all the experiences I had at school were shaping me into who I was, my views were simple at the time - I thought some things were cool and others sucked, but as I prepare to give a speech at my old high school tomorrow night, I feel like I'm now in a position to shape the next generation, and it's quite exciting.
I'll be speaking at The Hills Grammar School's sports presentation about how sport brings people together, I'll also be adding my own little flavour to it and talking about how sport can metaphorically, and literally save your life.
At an informal school reunion last week, it showed how important school was in shaping all of my old classmates - none of the class of 97 went on to become Prime Ministers or Olympians, but everybody at the reunion were REALLY good people. Conversations had turned from "have you done enough study for English?" and "what was your result in the Science prac?" to "how much did you pay for your house?" and "what are your kids names?" but thankfully not much else had changed, they were still good people making good decisions.
So tomorrow night, whether the kids think my speech is cool or it sucked doesn't really matter, it will be an experience they all share, and will go towards shaping them into the men and women they will become.

142-Bringing Blepharospasm out in the open
After nearly running into the back of somebody walking
down the Devonshire street tunnel this morning because my eyes closed
involuntarily, I thought it was time to bring my condition of
"blepharospasm" out into the open.
Blepharospasm is a neurological disorder characterised by involuntary
muscle contractions and spasms of the eyelid muscles. Basically "bleph" is an extended blink that can hit at any time. It is not
life-threatening, but it's really annoying - it's totally unpredictable, it can happen in the middle of a conversation, at the top of a set of stairs, walking across the road, or writing a blog.
Blepharospasm comes about due to extreme fatigue, so to get on top of it, major lifestyle changes are needed - good, unbroken , early sleeps, which 2 weeks out from a wedding is highly unlikely to happen, so if I'm talking to you and my eyes close, I apologise - I'm not bored, it's blepharospasm.
Bleph isn't an epidemic or a viral scourge - it's not even all that common, but I'd never heard of it before I was diagnosed with it, so I just wanted to let people know it exists.
If you are able to - get a good sleep tonight.

141-Importance of giving it a crack proven at rugby sevens
A Scottish rugby union player proved at a tournament against Fiji how important it is to never give up, and showed that no matter how hopeless a situation may look, to keep giving it a crack.
A huge Fijian player made a break down the middle of the field and was running away to an open try line with hardly a soul near him...besides one little Scot who looked like he was kidding himself. The Fijian giant crossed the line, and casually jigged in celebration thinking he'd scored, but he had forgotten to touch the ball on the ground.
All of a sudden the little Scot didn't look so hopeless - he charged at the giant who freaked out and dropped the ball as the Scot drove him over the dead ball line.
Giving it a crack, no matter how bleak things look, is important in a lot more fields than just Rugby Sevens, and on November 12, it will be coming to the world of comedy when "Give it a Crack" comes to the Sydney Comedy Store. In the second annual "Give it a Crack," a host of comedians from the RAW comedy festival - an event where inexperienced comedians step up and give it a crack themselves, and if they are chosen as having the "right stuff," are invited to perform at the Comedy Store. - will perform stand up to help raise money for the Pennant Hills AFL Club.
If you'd like to see what the event is all about, go to: https://drive.google.com/file/ d/0B1_ 6n4pYVnDNZUFJN0dEaE5aVTdiYnZkT FExNU5mVDhQR$30 sXkw/edit?usp= sharing, - I will not only be announcing what my secret, surprise announcement is, I will be auctioning it off! 140-Pennant Hills jumper signed by 2015 AFL premiership captain
A Pennant Hills jumper is up for auction which has been signed by Sydney Swans listed player and diabetic, Brandon Jack, his father, former Australian Rugby League fullback and NSW Blues and Balmain Tigers legend Garry, and 2015 AFL premiership captain Kieren.
Declaring I have the signature of next year's AFL premiership captain in October the year before may seem like a big call, but the events at Ern Holmes Oval circa 2002 at the Pennant Hills Demons vs East Coast Eagles game mean it's a call I can confidently stand behind.
Penno and East Coast are like cats and dogs, with a rivalry older than time itself, and on this day, the Eagles had Penno on the ropes - with about 30 seconds to go, East Coast were ahead by less than a goal and looked like they were cruising towards a win. Enter Kieren Jack. The Demons pumped the ball into the forward line where a big pack went up, but no one could take the mark, and a little kid, known to most as "Garry Jack's son" swooped in, picked up the ball and snapped a goal, giving Penno a win by a couple of points.
This is why I think the Swans will win the 2015 AFL Grand Final, Kieren was never interested in how he looked, or how many times he got on the highlight tapes, what made him a good footballler at Pennant Hills was the pride he had in his own performance - if he didn't work hard enough, his pride was so badly dented he did everything in his power to make amends the next week. With Grand Finals though, there is no next week, only next season, so Kieren will be a man on a mission in 2015, and as the co-captain at the Swans, making amends for his own performance won't be enough, he will be carrying the entire Swans squad with him.
This jumper WILL BE SOLD in this silent auction: www.32auctions.com/BarnabyHowarth, NOT finalised at Give it a Crack, so if you want to get this totally unique item, click on the link above and create an account (click on "LOGIN" which will take you to the "create account" button) and have a crack.

138-thoughts on a Swans GF pumping
I get really angry if my football team loses a game because they didn't try, but if they try as hard as they could but get beaten by a better team, I can live with that, and that's exactly what happened to the Sydney Swans today.
The Swans got pumped by Hawthorn but not because they showed a lack of effort or heart, on the contrary, the Swans were SO good in the back half of the season they looked as though they were expecting to win, but they came up against a juggernaught in Hawthorn, and they didn't have he answes to stop what was going on.
There aren't a lot of good things to come out of today for a Swans fan, but if there is one it's that their lesser lights will be stinging. The Swans were embarrassed today, but it was their kids who didn't show up-their stars weren't too bad, but the Swans live and die on how well their young blokes play, and today they just didn't turn up. So in 2015, those kids whose pride was severely dented today will be back with a vengeance, so look out AFL next season-there are going to be some talented footballers with a point to prove.
To back up my emotional statement, I've put $100 on the Swans to win the flag next year, so bring it on.

136-SPECIAL AFL GF EDITION-Penno in The Age
Kieren Jack and Jarrad McVeigh: Two little Demons who morphed into mighty Swans

High-end talent: Kieren Jack and Jarrad McVeigh with Swans coach John Longmire. Photo: Getty Images
The Pennant Hills football club has no club rooms; two years ago they had no home ground. At the weekend they lost their second grand final in a row.
What they can boast, however, are bragging rights over the two Sydney-raised products, Kieren Jack and Jarrad McVeigh, who Swans fans hope will lead their club to premiership glory on Saturday.
Established in 1972, the Demons are not among the bigger clubs in Sydney's AFL competition. They turn over $150,000 a year, roughly the wage of an AFL rookie plus match payments, and consider it a good year financially if they can break even.
Unlike their rivals, they do not pay any of their players. That they were able to field three winners of the Phelan Medal – the competition's equivalent of the Brownlow – at the weekend highlights how much the players love playing for the club.
"What it shows is even a community club can produce AFL-standard footballers in what is probably the hardest market in Australia," said club president Phil Hare.
The club has produced some of the high-end talent in the AFL. Lenny Hayes, the St Kilda warrior who retired this year after 297 games, cut his teeth at the club. So too McVeigh's brother Mark, who played 232 games for Essendon.
The club has 150 players across their three senior teams and up to 400 juniors. Their junior ranks have swelled significantly from when McVeigh and Jack were at the club.
"When I was president we had 86 players and the nearest soccer club had 90 teams," the club's former juniors president Jon Simpson said.
The club had to move from its old home ground because it was not considered big enough to play Premier Division footy. "It was on the side of a hill. It couldn't be made any bigger," club secretary Bob Wray said.
The club is lobbying the local council for money to help build club rooms and hope their submission to Hornsby Shire Council will be strengthened by the deeds of Jack and McVeigh.
McVeigh was always destined for big things. So big were the raps on the future No.5 draft pick he was seldom seen after his under-14 days as he progressed towards the big league.
Simpson can remember a representative game where the "skinny kid with the fuzzy Afro hair" dominated. "He was an absolute standout player. He had immaculate skills and he kept getting the ball," Simpson said. "He played half-forward, kicked five goals by half-time. The game was over, so the coach took him off because he was so far ahead of every other player."
Jack was not as naturally gifted as McVeigh, Simpson said, but had intangible qualities that showed he had a big future.
Simpson recalls an under-14 game where Jack, the son of rugby league great Garry Jack, was badly injured in a crunching tackle. Blinking back tears, Jack "got up, stood his man and dived on the ball again". His mother then took him to hospital to treat what was later diagnosed as broken ribs.
"We said at the time we never saw that quality in kids – but he had that courage and leadership," Simpson said. "He always had the work ethic of dad and the rest of his family have got."
Jack and McVeigh are still connected to the club. There are even whispers Hayes and McVeigh will line up for the Demons after their AFL days are over.
The Demons get a kick whenever Jack returns to the club, such as for an Auskick clinic, when he was a favourite among the youngsters. "They were hugging him. He listened to every story from every parent and kid," Simpson said.

134-Barnaby Howarth live on Conversations on ABC radio
With a booking to be a live guest on conversations with Richard Fidler on ABC radio on September 30, I feel like all the quotes I've lived by are all coming together, none more so than "sometimes s#*t just works out for you."
When I started my speaking business, there was the temptation to rush it through to start making money, but "if a job's worth doing, it's worth doing well," so I sat back and waited until it was perfect before I started rolling it out. Now I feel like the rolling stone that gathers no moss - tomorrow I'm speaking at the launch of Diabetes NSW new marketing strategy launch, next month I'm speaking at my old High School, I'm on ABC radio soon, then next year I'm speaking for the Murray business Network in Echuca, and I've been asked if I can talk at a conference in Melbourne with 1300 guests. Then in November, I'll be "going to the chapel and we're, gonna get married."
The day after our wedding, we will be going on our honeymoon, and as Big Kev said "I'm excited"
My future wife, Angela and I will be "making hey while the sun shines." We've decided we want to see as much of the world as possible, and to fund our travels we will be delivering keynote speeches around the world. Rather than sit back and analyse the “why mes” and “what ifs” of life, we just want to get on with enjoying it. We will be speaking to audiences about how facing our struggles with a smile on our faces has helped us appreciate the simple things in life.
To listen to my interview with Richard Fidler live online, or to subscribe to the Conversations podcast, go to www.abc.net.au/local/sites/conversations or if you want to go old school, just listen to the radio - tune into 702 AM from 11am-12pm on Tuesday, September 30th.
It seems fitting to close with my favorite quote: "Rain falls on the just and the unjust alike, but there comes a time when you just have to get over it and go and play in the puddles."
